Mushrooms, Theory of Love & Darwin's Lost Notebooks

Published almost 2 years ago • 2 min read

Hello Chosen Ones,

Welcome to my new experiment. This is our private pool for exploration. I offer to you- my week’s favourite curiosities

Please read this as you wish, however long you wish. Pick whatever. Feed the monster inside you. Be driven only by what your heart wants to read. No pressure.

I will see you again soon.

The Magic of Mushrooms

You’d be surprised to know that 250 million years ago a meteor hit our planet — resulting in the extinction of almost 90% of species. The ones who survived were either mushrooms or organisms that fed on mushrooms.

Watch this interview with Paul Stamets, one of the greatest American Mycologists, on how humans evolved from mushrooms and how they are responsible for creating soil — the fundamental layer of our ecosystem.

Paper of the week

Triangular Theory of Love: Psychologist Robert Sternberg’s theory describes types of love based on three different scales: intimacy, passion, and commitment.

These three parameters can vary in different types of relationships. It is a great way to identify at which stage you are in your relationship and how you can take it in a more meaningful direction.

The simplicity and accuracy of this model is brilliant.

News That Made Me Smile

Charles Darwin’s Stolen Notebooks Returned:

Two "stolen" notebooks written by Charles Darwin have been mysteriously returned to Cambridge University in a pink gift bag, 22 years after they were last seen.

Here’s what was written on the postcard found inside that bag:

Those small leather-bound books are worth millions of pounds and have Darwin's "tree of life" sketch.

The University librarian couldn’t stop smiling as she was breaking the news. "They're safe, they're in good condition, they're home."

If you are an admirer of Darwin like myself, this 3-min interview of her will fill you with pure joy.

Here's the secret. All of these tips require you to form some sort of habit, a routine, a repetition of doing the things that are important to you. Remove the 'reels' bracket from this video and I'll tell you only one thing, in life, the result of what things you do is always greater than the sum of its parts. This 'more' is formed out of doing things in a routine. So, essentially try and keep all the good habits you can; they matter more than you think.

Evolutionary History of Human Violence Humans have been extremely violent creatures for the better part of their 2,00,000 years of evolutionary history. We butchered our way to survival. When we study our fossils, we find that the biggest reason behind our ancestor’s death was murder — there was no concept of a terminal illness. However, later in the evolutionary spectrum, we realized the importance of collaboration. The change occurred when we transitioned From Nomadic Bands to Large...
